Central American and Caribbean sailing consolidates its place in the Top 10 of the Sunfish Class World Championship

The Central American and Caribbean Sailing (COCECAVE) celebrates the outstanding performance of the region's athletes in the Sunfish Class World Championship, organized under the International Sunfish Class Association (ISCA), where representatives from Central America and the Caribbean managed to position themselves among the top 10 places in the overall classification.

The championship brought together a highly competitive international fleet and was contested over eleven races, testing the consistency, technical preparation and mental strength of the competitors.
Regional Leadership in the Overall Standings
The world title was won by Simón Gómez Ortiz (Colombia), from the Acuarela Yacht Club, who was crowned champion thanks to a solid and consistent performance throughout the event. Gómez Ortiz finished with 37 net points, standing out for his consistent performance at the front of the pack.
Second place went to Jean Paul De Trazegnies (Peru), representing the Lima Regatta Club, who maintained a high level of competition throughout the championship and finished with 54 points.
In third place, Sebastián Medina (Puerto Rico), from the San Juan Yacht Club and the Sailing Academy, completed the world podium, reaffirming the high level of the Sunfish class in the region. Medina finished the championship with 54 points, standing out for his consistency against a top-level international fleet.



Strong Presence from Central America and the Caribbean
The overall standings showed a strong regional presence within the Top 10, confirming the sustained growth of sailing in Central America and the Caribbean:
Diego Silvestre (Guatemala) – 7th place
Juan Cañizales (Guatemala) – 8th place
Peter Stanton (Virgin Islands) – 9th place | St. Croix Yacht Club
Esteban Echavarría (Colombia) – 10th place | Antioquia Sailing League
In total, the region had athletes from 9 countries: Aruba (ARU), Colombia (COL), Cuba (CUB), Guatemala (GUA), Mexico (MEX), U.S. Virgin Islands (USV), Bonaire (BON), and Puerto Rico (PUR).
These results reflect the positive impact of the regional development, training and competition programs promoted by the national federations and supported by COCECAVE.

The performance of Central American and Caribbean athletes at this World Championship reaffirms the region's commitment to high-performance sports development, as well as to promoting and strengthening the Sunfish class as a key platform for training internationally competitive sailors.
