Excitement Builds as Sailing Competition at the Central American and Caribbean Games Set to Begin

The countdown is over as excitement continues to build for the start of the sailing competition at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo 2026. The Regatta is scheduled to begin on August 1 at the picturesque venue of Punta Salinas in the Dominican Republic. Sailors from 24 countries have spent the past few days arriving, inspecting their equipment, preparing their boats, and getting valuable practice time on the race course. The sailing competition runs through August 7.

Conditions at Punta Salinas are expected to provide excellent racing. The venue is well known for its reliable winds, with forecasts calling for steady winds generally ranging from 15 to 20 knots, with stronger gusts possible during the afternoon. These breezy conditions should reward smart tactics, strong boat handling, and consistent speed throughout the week.

Athletes representing Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Belize, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Jamaica, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Venezuela will compete for regional titles across 10 events.

The classes featured at the Games include ILCA 6 (Women), ILCA 7 (Men), Formula Kite (Women and Men), iQFOiL Windsurfer (Women and Men), ISCA/Sunfish (Women and Men), Snipe Mixed, Hobie Cat 16 Mixed, and I420 Mixed. The regatta also serves as an important stepping stone for many sailors on the pathway toward future Pan American Games and Olympic competition.

With the boats tuned, athletes ready, and favorable wind conditions expected, all eyes now turn to Punta Salinas as the first races of the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games sailing competition get underway.
